On the 22nd of July, the trailer for the Nigerian animated movie, Malika, dropped and we were literally screaming while watching it.
The movie follows the exploits of ‘Queen and military commander, Malika, who struggles to keep the peace in her ever-expanding empire. Growing up as a prodigy, Malika inherited the crown from her father in the most unusual of circumstances, splitting the Kingdom of Azzaz in half. After years of civil war, Malika was able to unite all of Azzaz, expanding it into one of the largest empires in all of West Africa.’
The Nigerian creative industry has been getting more and more…well, creative and Malika is a product of that.
It’s a big movie starring big names such as Adesua Etomi, Femi Branch, Deyemi Okanlowon, Blossom Chukwujekwu and Sambassa Nzeribe.
It’s being produced by Niyi Akinmolayan of Anthill Studios and is being directed by Roye Okupe whom some might remember as the mastermind behind the indie comic book, Exo, which was super popular a few years ago.
As for why people should be excited for Malika, I would say it’s mostly because of the animation as some of the shots were truly impressive. While it’s certainly not Pixar standard for Hollywood or Madhouse standard for Anime, it is certainly a step in the right direction.
It is also nice that the storyline is one that favors women empowerment as we see a woman headlining the movie and is also portrayed as a strong character.
Nigerian animation has been growing recently with a slew of works that have shown a definite upturn in the skill level of animators in Nigeria, but this is by far the most ambitious animated project so far and we hope to God is succeeds.
If there is any criticism I could give to what has been shown so far, it would be some of the voice acting. While the actors are all super talented, it did come off as a bit of trying too hard or trying to sound really grand. It might have been nice if they had a bit more fun with it.
That aside, we can’t wait to see the finished product and you can be sure we would be talking about Malika again sometime soon.
