Why I Included Nigerians And Other African Artistes On My Lion King, The Gift Album – Beyonce Speaks

The talented American singer, Beyonce who recently featured Some African Artistes In Her Lion King, The Gift Album has come out to give reasons as to why she made such a decision.

The mother of three gave a comprehensive explanation to this bold step and her choice of various artistes, gave the album different beautiful sounds. According to her, she got her influence from R&B, AfroBeat, Pop and other genre of music. She added that; “there’s a new experience of story telling, I wanted to do more than find a collection of songs that were inspired by the film. It is a mixture of genres and collaboration that isn’t one sound. It is influenced from everything from R&B, Pop, hip pop, and Afrobeat.”

The singer who is telling a story about Africa, said she wanted the music to be performed by the most talented and interesting African artistes, hence her choice of artistes narrowed down to Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade,Mr Eazi,Tekno, and Burna boy.

She further explained, saying;

Each song was written to reflect the film’s story telling that gives the listener a chance to imagine their own imagery while listening to a new contemporary interpretation. It was important that the music was not only performed by the most interesting and talented artistes but also produced by the best African producers. Authenticity and heart were all important to me.”

While this might be a win for Nigerians considering the highest amount of artistes on the collaboration, Kanyan artiste, Victoria Kimani is not so happy about the exclusive on Kanyan singers.

In a tweet, she expressed her solidarity to her fellow African artistes by saying how happy she was for them and also expressed how sad she was that Queen Bee, didn’t no involve any Kanyan singers in the project. She said “the thought is depressing seeing that the lion King movie is based on Kenya..” However, the project has been completed and maybe if she had made the complain earlier, she just might have been included.

The wait is over, the long and much anticipation of the movie is all over as the premier was yesterday!

The video for the song “Spirit” a track from the original sound track album for The Lion King by Beyonce also premiered a few days ago.
