Tiwa Savage Shuts Down Obalende To Perform “49-99”

Tiwa Savage took her new single “49-99” to the streets– literally. The singer made a surprise appearance to perform some of her hit songs.

The venue for this mini concert was in Obalende and it was possibly a way to give back as it gave fans who might never have normally been able to see Tiwa Savage perform, do so in such close quarters.

This move was for promotional purposes as the show was organized by Boomplay music and the single, which is off her upcoming 2020 album was well received by the crowd.

A photo from the show was shared on the official Instagram page of Universal Music Nigeria with Tiwa Savage holding up 2 fingers into the air with a great many fans behind her cheering on.

They captioned it: “LAGOS, from the bottom of our heart we appreciate you all! ❤❤ Thank you for having the Number 1 African Bad Girl @tiwasavage”

The show kicked off around 3:00pm and Tiwa Savage performed a couple of her golden oldies before finishing up with 49-99, the meaning of which she explained some time ago as a loose homage to Fela Kuti’s song about suffering and smiling.

Explaining the philosophy of the song, she said then, “The song encourages the young to put down the sense of inheritance and work for what they desire in life, for a better tomorrow. We can’t sit on our old glories and expect things to change for the better.

“‘49-99’ also addresses some political leaders who, instead of focusing on the growth of a nation, are there just for the money and having affairs with underage girls – while the citizenry is hustling hard to make a daily living.”

There was a tonne of traffic on the island yesterday at rush hour, it might be fair to say this was the reason, but hey, it’s Tiwa Savage.
