The stunning trifecta that is the Afrobeat sister group, Shiikane, have released a new EP called NWA or Nigerians With Attitude.
The trio of sisters have finally released their eagerly anticipated project which is more of what brought them to the limelight in the first place.
The EP, features songs such as Lagbaja, Mr. DJ and Weekend Love.
Shay Ifeanyichukwu, Princess Annamay Uchechukwu and sister Baby-Kay Nkemdilim form Shiikane and the three are sisters.
They have 2 full length albums and this will make their 3rd EP.
Shiikane weren’t initially accepted by Nigerians as they were born and bred in the UK, in an interview with the Punch, they talked about how they dealt with this initial rejection.
“When we first started, it was hard for people to understand what we were trying to do, because we were almost like the first of its kind as sisters singing together in a group. But our music has become a lot more accepted now than it was at the beginning. Another reason Nigerians are embracing us more is because we are also embracing our culture and roots. The Nigerian flavour is more in our music now.”
The three sisters lost their parents and they credited the loss as the reason they are such a tight knit group, “We argue a lot as sisters, but we also make up very quickly. Our parents are deceased and that makes us closer. In this industry, it is important to understand that family is very important. You have to keep your circle close because there are a lot of snakes in the music industry, and you have to be careful who you have around you.”
In 2016 they were nominated for the BEFFTA Awards in the Best UK African Female category and they won.
