Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has claimed that the Grammys are boring and that what we see on TV is just a tip of the iceberg.
The Afrobeat singer who is following in his father’s footsteps with his outspoken nature and people championing disposition, was speaking in an interview with Linda Ikeji TV and there he said that contrary to popular belief, the Grammys actually start as early as 2pm and then goes on for a pretty long time.
“Grammys are boring y’all. I’m sorry to tell you. First of all, it starts at 2, that’s what I didn’t know. Because on TV. it starts at 8,” Seun Kuti said.
He continued explaining the itinerary of the Grammys, “That 2 hours on TV, that’s the ghen ghen part. Grammy starts at 2. And from 2 to 7 is a big Jesus Christ party. Nigerians will feel welcome in this place, I’m telling you … It is about 40 different gospel categories. You don’t even understand how big the Grammys is tied. That’s why I understood when Soweto Gospel Choir won. ”
Sun Kuti was nominated for the ‘World Music Award’ category which also had acts like eventual winners, Soweto Gospel Choir, Yiddish, Bombino and a couple of others.
He said that the loss didn’t make him feel bad and that if he hadn’t even been nominated, he’d still be completely confident in his music. He said that he’s his own validation and that while it is good to be recognized by his peers, he doesn’t let that define him.
