A South African man who raped and murdered a young lady has finally gotten his comeuppance. The man, Luyanda Botha, raped and killed 19-year-old Uyinene Mrwetyana.
Botha, a post office worker, was sentenced to life in prison by a Western Cape High Court on Friday, November 15, 2019.
He perpetrated the crime in August
Judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe handed down the judgement on the 42-year-old who wouldn’t be eligible for parole for another 25 years.
Botha had arranged to be alone in the Post office with the victim after he had made sexual advances to her 2 weeks prior which she turned down.
He had lured her to the post office under the pretence that she had a package to pick up.
In his admission, he said, “I grabbed her by the waist and forcibly pulled her closer to me… the deceased fought while I sexually violated her,
“She managed to run to the door but I caught up with her and knocked her to the ground.”
He then dragged her into the Post Office safe and despite her screams. “I choked the deceased and she fought back and kicked me.” he said
The killer then used a weight to kill her and hid the body in the safe. He returned the next day to move it to his car. He then drove to a field in Lingelethu West, Khayelitsha, and dumped her body in a shallow hole before setting fire to it.
The case sparked opprobrium in the country over the high levels of sexual violence against women and even during a royal visit to South Africa, Princess Meghan Markle tied a ribbon to her shrine with a handwritten note stating that they stand with her.
