Multiple reports, including from Premium Times, state that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested Nigerian musician, Naira Marley
The artiste, whose real name is Afeez Fashola, was allegedly taken into police custody and while the exact reasons are unknown, it is quite likely to do with his comments on social media glorifying internet fraud popularly known as ‘Yahoo Yahoo’.
A report on Sahara Reporters does claim that a source intimated that the reason is to profile the singer and search through his laptops and phones to determine if there is a connection between him and Yahoo Yahoo.
In a recent Instagram live session, Naira Marley was caught on camera glorifying the act and he said: “All you guys, all the money in your pockets, all the money you spend, you think it’s the government that is making the money go round?”
He received huge backlash for this with many Nigerians outraged at his comments and labelling him a disgrace.
The singer recently released a new song titled ‘Am I a Yahoo Boy’ which he did with Zlatan and which has garnered a lot of attention of late.
So far there have been no statements made by the singer or his representatives about the arrest or the reasons behind it.
Naira Marley is not without allies though, as Davido put up an Instagram post which calls for the freedom of the singer and also states that he’s ‘got him’.
The Yahoo Yahoo debate has been a long running one which has divided Nigerians, with Nigerian OAP, Gbemioo stating that artistes who support such should have their brand deals stripped and Ali Baba putting out a video which he captioned: “I am not afraid of being unfollwed. The people I want to associate with are people who either lift me up or challenge me to be better. If you are a yahoo boy or their supporter, you will do well to avoid me. You are not my benefactor. And as for you yahoo followers, you don’t count.”
