Currently Nigeria’s most famous ‘Yahoo boy’ Obiwanne Okeke has been indicted for $11million fraud and faces up to 30 years in prison.
The ‘businessman’ was caught by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and has now been slammed with two counts of computer and wire fraud.
According to reports, if Okeke is found guilty, he would be forced to forfeit at least $11 million in cash and assets. He could also lose the diamond engagement ring found on him at the time of his arrest.
Obiwanne Okeke was arrested based on a complaint by Unatrac, an international subsidiary of heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar who claimed that the businessman had gained access to the files of their Chief Financial Officer and had thereafter duped the company of about $11 million. This along with the rest of the investigation carried out by the FBI had led to Okeke’s arrest.
Okeke even hired a Nigerian lawyer, John Iweanoje to stand for him in court.
Until his arrest, Obiwanne Okeke was known as an astute businessman who was profiled by the likes of Forbes and was seen as a role model to young Nigerian businessmen. It all seems to have fallen apart now with even his Anambra brothers disowning him and pleading with the general public not to judge the rest of the people from his area with the same metric as they will judge Okeke. He has also been used as a cautionary tale about the dangers of looking for any means to ‘blow’
His trial will begin on the 16th of September before which he is expected to enter a plea of ‘Not guilty’
