W.A.J.E. is the acronym for “words aren’t just enough”. With her vocal capabilities, words really aren’t enough.
Aituaje Iruobe is popularly known by her stage as WAJE was born on the 1st of September, 1980 in Akure but grew up in Benin City. Though her parents got divorced when she was very young, but, she is not devoid of love which is evident in the way she sings with so much love and passion.
She attended Word Of Faith Group Of Schools in Benin City for her primary and secondary school education and was also in the church choir and a lead singer in the choir. She furthered her studies at the University of Nigeria, NSUKKA and earned a degree in “ Social Works”. In 2007, while still in school, her love and passion to do music grew even more and she decided to improve through doing free gigs and shows.
She took her first shot at stardom when she did a remix on a song titled “OMOGEMI” originally done by the former duo group, Psquare. The remix was so loved that she was called to join in the remix of another song by the same duo group, titled “Do Me” in 2008.
Another opportunity to fame came knocking and she did take it seriously as the participated in a reality TV show, Advanced Warning organised by MTV Base South Africa and Zain now Airtel Nigeria. Although she didn’t win, she was a runner up.
After the reality show, she became more hungry to do music professionally and this she did and have so far collaborated with a lot of artistes such as Psquare, MI, 2face, Tiwa Savage, Diamond Plantnumz, Patoranking and have shared a stage with international star Wyclef Jean in South Africa and also opened for Keri Hilson sometime back in Calabar, Nigeria.
The 39-year-old artiste with her close friend and industry colleague, Omawumi launched a media company, Hernanes with the aim directed at film making and TV production, adverts, content curation, etc. she also starred in a movie She Is and recorded the soundtrack for the same movie alongside Omawumi.
She has worked as a judge on The Voice Nigeria while sharing the same judge experience with 2face idibia, Timi Dakolo and Patoranking.
With the spring up of new artistes who are now gradually stealing the spotlight, WAJE made an attempt to quit music as it has become a bit difficult to earn a living through singing(in her words). When the news broke out, lots of industry colleagues came to the rescue and was further encouraged not to give up on her passion.
She listened to the advice and in August 2019, she released a new song with her daughter in it alongside Mavin Records Artiste, Johnny Drille which was produced by Fatima and directed by Catalyst as a build-up to her September 1st concert tagged RedVelvet. Waje is a single mother to her daughter, Emerald and has always kept her private life away from the spotlight.
She has earned various award nominations and in the process, won some such as;
- Best Female Vocalist at 2011 Nigerian Entertainment Awards
