Jude Abaga aka M.I is a Nigerian hip hop artiste, Rapper, a producer, performing artiste and songwriter with Chocolate City Records.
He was born on the 4th of October, 1981 in Jos and hails from Takum in Taraba State. He attended Baptist High School and started developing his interest in music while still in secondary school. He has special skills in playing the piano.
He kicked off his music career in 2003 after his return to Nigeria from Calvin College in Michigan. He released a mixed tape that same year alongside a single titled “Safe”. This brought him to the limelight and earned him several nominations and awards.
His recognition projected him high and the inspiration for his first studio album came, ” Talk About It”. He collaborated with other artistes like his brother, Jesse Jags who is also a rapper, Ice Prince, Djinee and many others. M.I later got signed to the high profile record label, Chocolate City and he has been unstoppable ever since.
The list of nominations and awards he’s earned are too numerous to mention. Below are a few;
- He won Lyricist On The Roll at the 2018 Headies Awards.
- He won Best Rap Album at 2015 Headies Awards.
- He won the Hip Hop Revelation at 2009 hip hop world awards.
- Nominated as the Best Performer, 2018 at the Headies Awards.
- Nominated for Musician of the Year at Modeman Award in 2008.
The award-winning rapper has faced lots of challenges with industry colleagues which have lasted to date. Before his recent feud with Vector Tha Viper, he once had beef with Kelly Handsome when he used Kelly’s name in an unpleasant manner in one of his songs and Kelly Handsome’s response was for the whole Chocolate City Crew. He also had another one with Iceberg Slim and both artist went off on themselves.
He is currently in a rap battle with Vector that has unfortunately led to a series of other events.
M.I has successfully been able to separate his private life from his business which is to the admiration to many.
Despite these challenges, he has played a major role in the Nigerian Music Industry and has been described by many as the Nigeria hip hop Messiah with a good example of leadership as a Northerner in the music business.
M.I Abaga has flows, rhymes and is a hitmaker who has remained relevant in the industry throughout his career.
