Multichoice Plans To Make 52 Local Movies In 2020- As Streaming Subscribers Doubles

With the emergence of Netflix in 2016, an online streaming platform, the world of streaming, totally changed, because of its quality original contents. But, let’s not forget the existence of Multichoice long before Netflix.

Dstv Now and Showmax are free services of Dstv subscribers, but Netflix requires a paid subscription.

Dstv and Showmax combined the number of users they both have and found out that, the number of users they have, are considerably bigger than Netflix in South Africa. Though, no numbers were disclosed as at the time of this report.

It was noticed that, there was a slight drop of subscribers in South Africa from 8%=500,000 to 7%=100,000. But, subscribers grew from 17% =1.1 million to 7.7million, in the rest of Africa.

But, in the past year, Multichoice streaming platforms such as Showmax and Dstv doubled their users and one can say without a doubt is as big if not bigger than Netflix. It is allowed because, it is a healthy competition.

According to Calvo Mawela, the CEO, Multichoice who is so pleased with how far they have come, had this said:

“Our growth is exceptionally pleasing, especially in the current economic climate and a clear indication that our strategy is working”.

There is also a plan on ground by Multichoice(Dstv, Mnet, Showmax and Mzansi Magic) to increase its overall local offerings and to produce 52 local movies in the coming year not forgetting also the plan to produce 29 local dramas within 12 months.

Multichoice further disclosed that, plans are also on ground to increase its General Entertainment Speed on local content by 45% from the current 40% in 2022 due to its published financial report. However Showmax is likely to increase its sports offerings to make it different that of Netflix.

Well done Multichoice and we await the changes stated above.
