Nollywood actress and producer, Monalisa Chinda, is in the crosshairs of the Nigerian judicial system after being declared wanted by a court.
An Igbosere court gave the order for the actress over a tax evasion charge.
She was accused of not appearing in court since 2017 and therefore, a bench warrant was issued against her.
Justice Adedayo Akintoye who presided over the case noted that neither Chinda nor her lawyer were present in court for the proceedings.
The warrant was first ordered in January,2019 which in turn was due to accusations that Chinda who is a prominent figure in the Nigerian movie industry had failed to file annual tax returns and pay income tax in respect of her company, Monalisa Code Productions, for six years.
In January, prosecution counsel, Y. A. Pitan disclosed to the court that Chinda had not been in court since 2017 when the charges were first brought against her.
“The defendant has been served with hearing notice. The proof of service is in the court’s file,” the prosecution lawyer said.
Chinda’s charge reads in part:“Failure to furnish and file annual tax returns for the purpose of personal income taxation with the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) contrary to Section 94(1) of the Personal Income Tax Act 2004 (as amended).”
The count also read that Monalisa Chinda Coker “of Monalisa Code Productions, being a taxable person in Nigeria and carrying on business at… Lekki… failed to furnish and file tax returns on your personal income for the years 2011 to 2016”
Count two reads: “Failure to pay income tax contrary to Section 56 of the Lagos State Revenue Administration Law of 2006.”
Chinda has been in the industry for decades, appearing in her first movie ‘Pregnant Virgin’ in 1996 before doing a slew of other movies.
Her big break came in 2007 when she appeared as a major character in the popular soap opera, ‘Heaven’s Gate’
There has been no official response from Monalisa or anyone on her team at the time of this report.
