Mayorkun Reveals What The ‘Hmmm’ On His Song, True, Means

Mayorkun has followed the success of his debut album, Mayor of Lagos, with a string of singles including the wildly popular ‘True’.

The song features Kizz Daniel and has been playing on the airwaves for the better part of a month.

It’s a great song, but avid listeners noticed that there was a part of the lyrics to the song which could be termed as…um…questionable.

The part goes like this:

I don’t mean to be rude girl,
Omalicha ooh ahh,
But I want to hmmm on your face
Spend all my money ooh,
Fight for you like Jet Li oo

The ‘Hmmm’ was a point of interest for many as it is pretty open to interpretation.

In a video where he was communicating with fans, Mayokun instructed his listeners to remove the ‘hmmm’ and replace it with ‘smile’ and that it is only those with gutter minds who would read it as anything other than that.

The video which featured Mayorkun in bed, also saw him talk about how he was bombarded with questions at a press conference about the lyrics of the song and that since it’s music there are certain liberties that can be taken.

He did entertain fans in the video with a rendition of the song which you can be sure the people viewing the video enjoyed quite a lot.

True is a great song in which Mayorkun and Kizz Daniel sing about their love for their respective partners and how they want to do the best for them. A catchy beat produced by Young Jonn and a colorful video  directed by Aje Filmworks make for a great package that fans have absolutely gobbled up.

So perhaps the ‘hmmm’ doesn’t mean smile and means something more– adult, but we can’t deny that the song is fire and one simple, ambiguous word in it can’t spoil the experience.
