An unidentified man who accused actor Kevin Spacey of sexual assault and was in the process of suing the actor, has died.
The man, who filed charges in court, went with the moniker ‘John Doe’ which is what is used when the person in questions refuses to reveal his/her identity.
The man filed against Kevin Spacey in 2018 claiming that the actor had forced him to take hold of his genitals during a massage session in Spacey’s Malibu home.
The news is of great significance to Spacey who only recently had charges against him dropped in Nantucket, Massachusetts. There, a busboy had claimed that Kevin Spacey assaulted him, but the case was dropped when the victim stopped cooperating.
It is unknown what the cause of death for John Doe was.
With this in play now, litigating against Spacey will be very difficult indeed and if the survivors of John Doe want to sue, they can, but this would also mean they have to give up their anonymity.
In a statement sent to the Hollywood Reporter, the lawyers of the deceased confirmed the death of John Doe and also how much of a shock it was to the family.
“It is true that Mr. Doe recently died,” the statement said. “His untimely death was, to his family, a devastating shock that they are struggling to process and is so recent that they have not yet held his funeral service. Out of professional responsibility, we notified Spacey’s counsel of Mr. Doe’s passing. We explained our intent to allow his family more time to get past their immediate, paralyzing grief and begin settling his affairs before we filed a death notice with the court — which is our prerogative as his counsel. Spacey ignored our request for compassion and filed the notice yesterday without our consent.”
The fight will continue according to John Doe’s lawyer. It would be interesting to see how things move from here as this could mean more people, emboldened by John Doe’s death, could come forward. It could also mean that if the death is suspicious, people will be scared to come forward.
