November kicked off in sucky fashion for South Africans after it was announced that popular presenter Xolani Gwala has passed away.
Popular with Radio 702, Gwala had been battling with cancer for a while before finally succumbing to death.
He leaves behind a wife and two children.
Xolani Gwala was diagnosed with a rare form of colon cancer back in 2017 and he proceeded to treat it. He returned to his radio duties in 2018.
Speaking in an interview with SABC, he said: “It’s been a crazy year but as I have said before‚ it’s going to take me a really long time to understand it. It has been hell, perhaps that’s the easiest thing to say.”
One of his colleagues, Eusebius McKaiser, announced the death of Gwala on his social media, writing: “Devastating news. RIP Xolani Gwala. You were a brilliant broadcaster, a kind human being with an affable smile, always. Condolences to your family and friends. Rest in peace, my colleague.”
There was outpouring of grief following this with one of the replies to Eusebius’ tweet reading: “In tears 💔- will miss your infectious laugh – my Happy Start to the Day. Your unwavering commitment to a better SA – we are less without you. Thank you for sharing yourself with us – Thank you to your family for sharing you with us… You are our Earthly Angel gone home, RIP 🙏🏽”
Another said: “XG was a “mind-sobered, speech-measured and good-mannered” human being. SA will miss this radio personality and talk host of exceptional talent and remarkable gift! MHSRIP n condolences to the Wife, family n entire Mphephethwa clan as is to Radio 702, radio fraternity n ALL SAns!”
