Ghanaian actor John Dumelo has joined the growing number of celebrities going into politics after announcing his candidacy for the Parliamentary elections.
The actor picked his nomination form and will be contesting for the primaries of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
John Dumelo released a statement on his candidacy saying, ‘It’s time for Ayawaso West Wuogon….it’s time to listen and serve the interest of the people. It’s time for a change…I John Dumelo, humbly ask you to support me on this journey. God bless you and God bless Ghana. Please follow the official campaign page for daily updates’.
The actor is certainly confident he can handle the job after sitting down for an interview with Kwesi Parker Wilson and claiming that he would make a marvelous MP. He also gave his reasons for running for office.
“It was a call by the youth in the party, it was a call even by the youth outside the party, it was a call by the floating voters that: ‘Look, John, we want you to come and contest, we need your voice in parliament and a representation of them in parliament’; and if it’s my voice, it’s their voice and if it’s their voice, it’s my voice. I think that they called on me to contest, I sat down, I made a few calls, I made some few consultations and I realized that: ‘Look if the people are calling you to contest, why not?’. He said
“[I did have the desire to be a Member of Parliament] but you know, when you have the desire and the people add their voice to it, then you know that it’s a sign and it’s the time for you to contest” he added.
There is a lot of excitement following this announcement especially with some of the colleagues of John Dumelo.
She said “People from this side of the world always look down on actors and actresses but I am glad we’ve been able to prove a lot of people wrong,”
