Empire has been renewed for Season 6 amidst dobuts about Jussie Smollet’s return

Empire (Lyon boys)

Empire is certainly returning for a 6th season, but it might not be returning with Jussie Smollett, although the actor might still return.

As you might recall, Jussie Smollett has been facing legal battles as he continues to try and clear his name from any wrongdoing following allegations of falsifying Police reports.

“By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for Season 6, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to ‘Empire,'” said a statement jointly put out by Fox Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV.

While the actor’s legal troubles were rumbling, he was written out of the tail end of the 5th season. The reason being that his character, Jamal Lyon, was off on his honeymoon with his husband.

There is hope though, as the extension shows that the show might now be done with him just yet.

In the meantime, a spokesperson for the actor said: “We’ve been told that Jussie will not be on ‘Empire’ in the beginning of the season, but he appreciates they have extended his contract to keep Jamal’s future open. Most importantly, he is grateful to Fox and ‘Empire’ leadership, cast, crew and fans for their unwavering support,”

Jussie Smollett has received the support of his cast mates including Taraji P Henson and Terrence Howard.

They, along with other cast mates, put out an open letter in which they defended Jussie Smollett and asked that he be reinstated on the show, concluding their letter thus: “[We] ask you to keep Jussie on the cast so that we can all put this behind us and move forward,

“It’s our hope that together we will move into our sixth season as the entire Empire family should.”

No release date has been put forward for Season 6, but we’re sure it’s coming.
