If you were one of those who subscribed to the school of thought that being a child of a country’s number one citizen or President, I am sorry to disappoint but you’d have to think twice. As a matter of fact, Michelle Obama recently opened up on life in the White House and you will be amazed by her revelations.
The former First Lady of the United States of America recently had a candid conversation with Gayle King as she attended the Essence Festival in New Orleans and she revealed tips on how to raise a child inside the White House.
According to Michelle, one of the keys to raising Sasha and Malia Obama was having the ability to pretend like all the craziness around them isn’t happening. In her words;
That meant pretend like all the craziness around them wasn’t happening.
For eight years we were like, Yup, your dad’s president. That doesn’t have anything to do with you.
She further stated that her main goal was to make sure her daughters live a normal life, go to school and do their homework but, of course, with public eyes always on them. She said;
Your goal is to go to school, come back, get some decent grades.
Don’t act up. Don’t embarrass us!
She went on to reveal some important moments in the girl’s lives while they were in the White House.
Imagine trying to have your first kiss around a bunch of men with guns and earpieces.
The former First Lady also joked about the complexities her daughters’ friends had to face whenever her daughters were visiting for sleepovers. She said;
Imagine having Malia and Sasha come to your house for a sleepover.
This is the call: It’s like, ‘Hello. OK, we’re going to need your Social Security number, we’re going to need your date of birth’.
There are going to be men coming to sweep your house, if you have guns and drugs, just tell them yes because they are going to find them anyway.
Don’t lie, they’re not going to take them, they just need to know where they are.
And, uh, thank you for having Malia and Sasha over. Oh, and by the way, there is going to be a man with a gun sitting outside all night.
If you let him use the bathroom, that would be nice.
I mean, I’m surprised my kids have any friends, you know.
Nevertheless, through all of the madness of being America’s first family, we can say for sure that Barack and Michelle Obama did their best to raise two beautiful, smart, and intelligent young girls. They must be really proud of their daughters.
