About three weeks after he released a Spanish language album, African-American singer and record producer Akon has released another album, Akonda – an afrobeat-influenced album dedicated to his African ancestry.
The body of work, which was released on Friday, October 25th as his fifth studio album via his own Akonik Label Group, features Olamide, Kizz Daniel and Skales, three renowned afrobeat musicians.
Akon’s first collaboration with a Nigerian artiste was with Wizkid on a remix of his song. He later went on to sign Nigerian duo P-Square and they did a song together featuring May D titled “Chop My Money” before he collaborated with B-Red for the song “Cucumber”.
Akon is among the globally acclaimed artistes who appear to be reconnecting with their African roots, having recently announced his move to Senegal after many years of living in the United States.
Aside from his recent collaboration with Nigerian artistes and his establishment of a record label dedicated to Afrobeats, the singer recently claimed to have once signed Davido, P-Square and Wizkid to his label — although he didn’t initiate a contract to that effect.
In his words;
I never left music alone, cause, when I was in Africa, I was building the Afrobeats scene.
When I first went out there in 2008, I signed Wizkid and I was doing lots of consulting for lots of artistes. I signed Davido, Psquare. Davido was like my little brother.
Akonda is the second of the three albums Akon said he will be releasing in October – El Negreeto being the first and Konnekt is expected to complete the list.
All the albums are released on his Akonik Label Group. The label group is comprised of four record labels, Akonda (Afrobeats), Akonik (U.S.), Ke Lo Ke (Latin music) and Jamakon (Caribbean) that will be signing and promoting emerging artists from different regions in the world.Akonda was released on Akonda.
Congratulations to Akon abs all our Nigerian artistes that are featured.
