5 Nollywood Stars We’ve Sadly Lost This Year

Following the tragic news of McLinchung’s passing following a car accident while returning from his mother’s funeral, we decided to take a look at 4 more Nollywood personalities we’ve lost this year already

Gbenga Akintunde

The actor, who was popularly known as ‘Burger’ by his fans, kicked off the list when he died on the 3rd of January this year.

Kunle Afod, a filmmaker had announced the death saying: “You called yesterday to confirm if I would still be holding my New Year party today and I was called this afternoon that you are no more, Burger. Heard you went to the hospital to complain about malaria this afternoon and few hours later, you are in the mortuary; this is so sad.”

He was just 47

Funmilayo Ogunsola

The actress, who was also popularly known as Mama Ijewuru died on the 6th of January. She was a Nollywood veteran who was also a wife to Ishola Ogunsola, a founding member of the Association of National Theatre Arts Practitioners.

Alfred Rotimi Popoola

This veteran actor in Nollywood, also known as ‘Ilu Venture’, died on the February 27th in Abeokuta after falling ill.

The Abeokuta chapter of Theatre Arts and Movie Practitioners Association of Nigeria, TAMPAN, broke the news of his death in a statement in which they said:“We are saddened to announce the untimely death of our beloved colleague Hon. Alfred Rotimi Popoola aka Ilu Venture. After brief sickness; yesterday 27th Feb., 2019.”

Abe Ishola Monsurat Olabisi

The Yoruba actress, who was also known as Bisket, passed away rather recently, the 30th of March to be exact. She was a member of the Theatre Arts and Movie Practitioners Association of Nigeria, TAMPAN. Her death was particularly tragic as it occurred a mere 10 days after she was delivered of a new baby.

A colleague of her’s, Omolola Olumide, wrote a moving tribute on Facebook.

It reads:

I am short of words.. In fact, I don’t know what to even write.. How do I start writing your Epistle Olabisi Monsurat , Aya Abe, OMO Ishola.. (Bisket) .. Have been in shock since yesterday that I heard about your sudden exit from this sinful world..

You’re such a rare gem, a friend like blood sister. Loving and caring. We do have our differences but we settled it amicably without people knowing.. I will miss you dearly the memories we shared still lingers in my heart..

Olabisi , please look back and watch over your 10 days old baby, Yoruba says Oku olomo o ki nsun. Please, don’t forget your family , husband and the children you left behind..

National Tampan says RIP
Ogun State Tampan says RIP
Lagos State Tampan says RIP
Your LG Government Lagos Island Tampan says Good night..

I will miss you, Goodbye Bisket.

Other Nollywood practitioners have also died in this period including Tony Anyasodor and Behind the Cloud mastermind, Paul Emema

All these stars, bar McLinchung, died due to illnesses and with the likes of Sadiq Daaba, Victor Olaotan and Baba Suwe all ill, one wonders if the season of mourning isn’t about to be extended.

To all who have bitten the dust this year, we bid a tearful farewell

Rest in Peace
