12 Year Old Nigerian Boy, Chika, Discovers New Maths Formula

Nigerians are making the country proud outside the shores of the country as we hear news of a 12-year-old boy, Chika, who discovered a new mathematical formula.

Chika Ofili was doing some of his holiday homework when he devised a means with which to easily ascertain if a number can be divided by 7.

Chika’s teacher, Miss Mary Ellis, gave him a book  called First Steps for Problem Solvers. The book had practical tests with which to ascertain if a number is divisible by  2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9.

It didn’t have any way to check for the number 7. Chika saw this and set to work, solving this problem and even showing his working using algebra.

What Chika’s process does is take the last digit of any whole number, multiplying it by 5 and then adding it to the remaining part of the number to get a new number.

Chika and new formula

A twitter account that celebrates Nigerians in diaspora put out a tweet announcing the success of Chika.

The tweet read: “Congratulations to Master Chika Ofili, A 12-year-old Nigerian boy based in the UK who just received the ”TruLittle Hero Award” He received the award for making a new discovery in Mathematics by discovering a new formula for divisibility by 7 in Mathematics.”


Many Nigerians commented on this, although some tried to make it about tribe which was too bad.

Another of the comments read: “Big Congratulations, Big Boy! Nigeria, Nigerians and the Diasporans are proud of you and your accomplishment! You’re an example of a TRAILBLAZER.”

Chika is clearly a special boy and it will be interesting to see what he is able to do next with the weight of expectation surely on him now.
